Japanese car manufacturer, Toyota seems to not want to miss in creating smart cars to face the challenges of the future. The smart car using automated steering feature. And cars were already tested on the streets of Japan.
In contrast to Google and Apple who designed fully autonomous driving system, Toyota took a different method, Toyota's own version where humans is still control the car.
Toyota's autonomous driving tech concept called "Highway teammate". The concept looks more friendly where there is a relationship and cooperation between the driver and car. Cars equipped with various sensors and features that help the driver can rest while being on the freeway.
Toyota argued that the the interaction between the driver and car should be like a mirror. Both relate to each other like best friend.
"Toyota believes that the interaction between the driver with the car should be like between two close friends who share the same goal. To represent the concept, we make it happen what we call "Highway teammate", "said Toyota.
As a pilot project, Toyota uses Lexus GS in highway Tokyo Shuto Expressway.
This technology automatically evaluating traffic conditions, make decisions, and take steps for driving on the freeway like changing lanes and maintain a safe distance. Braking or acceleration can be done automatically by the system.
Tested a prototype car on the freeway using road map data and several sensors that can detect other vehicles around. The feature also aims to improve driver safety .
To develop these technologies, Toyota partnered with Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The plan features Toyota's teammate Highway began to be launched in 2020, watch the video below,
